The French Paradox

By Simon Mitchell The French, in terms of diet and disease, are a statistical enigma. They relish high fat food, consume alcohol regularly and often smoke - the very picture of the World Health Organisations risk group. High protein, meat based meals include duck, goose and pork - even cooked in fat as a preference! Butter, cream, pork fat and wine are regular ingredients. Yet they have comparatively low rates of stomach and colon cancer and the second-lowest world incidence of heart disease after Japan. The French Paradox is well known to nutritionists and reasons for this statistical enigma are emerging. One of their pet names for the English is Les Ros Bif, in reference to the traditional overcooked Sunday roast dinner. French cooking is much lighter than British, leaving many of the valuable nutrients in the food, rather than throwing them out with the pan water. The French relish their food and eat widely, they often take the trouble to prepare meals from fresh, home-grown, organic produce, meaning they get more minerals and nutrients from food. They also mix food elements to compliment each other, from a very wide base of ingredients that change with the seasons. High protein dishes are accompanied by generous salads and nutritious, easily assimilated soups are popular. Dried broad beans and chick peas are also part of winter staples, adding anti-oxidant beans and pulses to a wide diet. It is a well celebrated fact that the French eat everything! Polyphenols in red wine and the intelligent French use of herbs in cooking help to break down fats in the food and aid digestion. Alcohol licensing laws in France also mean that they tend not to binge drink as much as countries with more restrictive licensing laws. The anti-oxidant properties of red wine in its moderate but steady intake are a contributing factor to French health. Research in McDonalds restaurants in France also reveals interesting evidence. It was found in America that the average time it took a person to consume a burger was 11 minutes. In France this doubled to 22 minutes. In France eating is often a cultural and family activity. They take their time eating and conversation is an important part of sharing food. They make eating into a quality time. The French diet is Epicurean compared to the American convenience diet, where cheap, snack food is widely available wherever you go. The car centred culture of America also means its inhabitants sometimes lack exercise. The French have an attitude to eating that is not fixated on health or medicalising food, just simple enjoyment of wholesome and fresh ingredients prepared well. People in rural France often value the whole process of food from growing it right through to preparing and eating. It is no surprise that internationally known French phrases include such as Bon appetit or Joi de vivre. How to Use Essential Oils

By Lenny Balston Essential oils have therapeutic properties that have been proven through the ages. They can be used to treat a wide range of ailments. Take a look at our searchable oils database to find the oil that’s suitable for you and then consult this guide on how to use of them. Room Fresheners There are a wide variety of oil burners available on the market. It does not matter which type you have - you just need to add a few drops of essential oil to the burner with some water to freshen up your room. Alternatively you could make a room spray, by adding a few drops of essential oil to water in a spray bottle to spritz the room. Try a lavender spray which you can use on your pillows just before bedtime for a good nights sleep. Baths This is my favourite way to use essential oils as lying in a nice hot bath gets me in just the right frame of mind to enjoy them. Blend 5-10 drops essential oil in a teaspoon of base oil. Add to the bath once it has been run. It will stay on the surface of the water and will be easily inhaled. Alternatively, if you want the oil to mix with water, blend 5-10 drops essential oil in a tablespoon of full fat milk and add to your bath. Showers If you prefer a shower, add 6 drops of essential oil to the shower tray before turning on the taps. Try stimulating oils to give you an energy boost and get you going in the morning. If you’re feeling brave finish your shower with a cold burst of water for two minutes to boost your circulation. Inhalations Add 4-6 drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming hot water. Sit with a towel over your head and the bowl as you inhale the vapour - this method is not suitable for asthma sufferers or young children. Alternatively add 4 drops of essential oil to a handkerchief. Hold to your nose and inhale every few moments. Massage For a single massage, blend 2-3 drops of essential oil in 10ml carrier oil (sweet almond is good for a massage). Do not use more than a total of 5 drops of different oils per massage. Compresses Add 6 drops of essential oil to a bowl of warm water. Soak a clean cloth in the water - then place the cloth on the affected area. If you have further suggestions on how to use essentials oils please do send them to us, in the meantime I hope you enjoy discovering the healing powers of these wonderful oils. Always consult your doctor before using essential oils. Lenny Balston is the founder of the alternative lifestyle portal Harmonious Living. Visit http://www.harmoniousliving.co.za. Rapid Weight Loss Without Hunger

By Norman Motta Heavy but hungry? You aren’t alone. One out of every 4 Americans are on some sort of diet. Yet, over 90% of the people who lose weight by dieting, gain it back again. Why can’t people get rid of weight, and keep it off? Can “starvation” diets help? Attempting Rapid Weight Loss Without Hunger, can you actually eat good and still lose weight? Facts, Tips, and Myths about losing weight rapidly - and keeping it off As for weight loss, weight - even considerable weight, may be lost on a starvation diet. Your body is like a furnace; your brain could be likened to the thermostat. When we eat, our metabolism burns the food, then releases it in the form of energy. So when more fuel (food) is taken in than the body needs, it is simply stored - as fat. Now…if you starve yourself to lose weight, you will - initially. Perhaps then as a defense mechanism, your body goes into a “crisis mode”. Your thermostat is turned down, thus your metabolism slows, resulting in weight gain again. Much of what you eat is then stored as fat. So begins the “revolving door”. You try another diet. The more you lose , the more you gain. Starvation diets are not the answer for weight reduction. What about taking weight-loss pills? Weight loss pills. The primary function of weight loss pills is to curb your appetite, and may work for awhile. But the body adjusts quickly, and the appetite returns. So does the vicious weight gain cycle. Both weight loss pills and pills to eliminate water can have side effects: dizziness, high blood pressure, addiction, and even anxiety attacks. “There is no such thing as a safe, effective pill to cause you to lose body fat” (Dr. Lawrence Lamb) Weight loss pills are not the answer. And why take them, when you can actually enjoy Rapid Weight Loss Without Hunger? You can slim your body way down and still eat good. How does a person “eat and lose weight”? Consider and implement some tested & proven… Effective tactics and strategies for safe weight reduction Where do we turn then, for rapid weight loss without hunger? Begin with a thorough checkup with your family physician. Find out if you have any health problems that might only defeat a simple diet plan. Be realistic, set a reasonable weight loss goal. Implement an achievable strategy, in a reasonable time frame. Don’t try to over-achieve. Should you go hungry? It’s no secret that I enjoy food, I’ll bet you do too. It is a primary joy in our lives, to largely eliminate that joy would be counter-productive, and perhaps create other problems for us. Besides, it will not work - not in the long run. Overeating, on the other hand, may be what we need to focus on. Let’s consider some simple tips on moderate eating habits and burning those calories, reducing the fat. Weight loss tips and tricks that will leave you satisfied Eat slowly. These days, most of us are in “high gear” so much of the time, we often eat too fast. Remember this: It takes the brain about 20 minutes to recieve the signal from our stomach that it is full. Eat too fast and you may be eating too much. You’re full already, but your stomach’s message to the brain didn’t get there on time. Slow down when you eat. Chew each bite real good, take a little time in between each bite. One large glass of water. Drink a large glass of water before you eat. This fills your stomach and may help reduce body-fat deposits. Doctors recommend drinking at least eight glasses of water every day. You’ll feel satisfied like you’ve eaten as much as usual, but you’ve actually cut down on your calorie intake. Plus, your food is better assimilated. Don’t watch TV while you eat. Why? Dr. Seymour Isenburg says “If you are busy watching TV…, you [can] begin eating like a machine.” I never gave that any thought before, myself. However, examining my own eating habits, I found it to be true in my case. So turn off the TV, enjoy some quiet conversation, or relaxing music. Enjoy your meal. Don’t beat yourself up about eating. You are taking an important step to achieve Rapid Weight Loss Without Hunger. Do you skip breakfast? Well - Don’t! Enjoy at least a moderate breakfast. You want to be thinner…so you skip a meal or two. Maybe it’s breakfast. Your brain will only tell your body later that you have deprived it, and that you are really hungry now. You’ll tend to load on the food, thus the calories later in your day. This is only counter-productive. Explore healthy alternatives to eating. Do you find yourself often just eating out of habit? I know that I do. When you catch yourself about to eat just for the sake of eating, Go for a walk…or get some other exercise. Do you have a hobby you enjoy? Go work on it. Talk to someone you trust. Maybe go do something active with them. Replace the avtivity of reaching for food with other stimulating activities. What you eat. Not an easy one, but avoid fatty foods. Just makes sense, doesn’t it? Cheeseburgers, foods fried in fat. You won’t get good nutrition from sugary drinks and pastries, what you will get is a lot of calories. Also, a lot of salt on your (even lean) beef, will cause your body to retain water. Develop your taste for healthy foods. Let’s face it, most of us really like them anyway. I’m talking about fruit, nuts, whole grains, and vegetables. As part of our daily routine. There’s a tremendous variety in these foods, enjoy that variety so you don’t get bored, and maybe go back to the cheeseburger routine. Most dietitians will tell you there’s nothing wrong with enjoying your favorite foods once in a while. The key here, as in so many things, is moderation. Engage your thermostat. Aerobic exercise for about 20 minutes a day, and at least three times a week, will “turn up” your body’s thermostat and burn calories. Brisk walking, if you’re able, even stair climbing is good excercise. No matter what our body weight or body type - excercise makes us look leaner and trimmer. It changes our body chemistry and increases muscular mass. Something I learned in this research is that muscles burn calories even while we’re sleeping! What a plus! Persistence and determination. There are no substitutes for these qualities. But the rewards can be great. You’ll look and feel better, and be able to do more physically, even mentally. You’ll be determined to have Rapid Weight Loss Without Hunger. Who Benefits from a Long Guarantee?

By Jan Smith And what is the real guarantee behind the guarantee that everyone promises at the end of their sales letters? Who really is the beneficiary of a long guarantee? You see, some ’savvy’ marketers have figured out that the longer the guarantee period offered the less returns they’ll have. They work on the principle that because people have a longer time frame in which to return something, they’ll put it aside ‘to do later’ and never get around to even looking at the product again, let alone return it for a refund. Theyve given up in disgust. I’m not, and neither are many others, boomerang buyers and the times I have needed to call on the guarantee given in a product sales letter has cost me heaps of money. I think Clickbank has the right idea where they only offer a product guarantee for 90 days. This goes some way towards keeping some sellers honest but I still don’t think it’s far enough I’ve been ’stung’ more than once and frankly, I now believe that most guarantee’s are simply obligatory sales letter endings placed just before the P.S’s in salesletters. I think there needs to be guarantee insurance coverage for all businesses operating on the Internet who want to sell a product. I think this is needed to cover digital info products, software and anything sold via the Internet. Now I won’t buy any product unless it is recommended by someone whom I know - or have come to learn as being a ‘kosher’ operator through getting to know them via their newsletters/Emails for some time. And if I have ‘talked’ with them personally via Email, the better the chances are that I will purchase many of the things that they are promoting. This is both protective and self-limiting. But I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been driven into this corner by unscrupulous operators. It seems to me that the less a person is known, even if they are resellers of well-known people’s products, the more doubtful is their guarantee. Let’s face it - if a person who isn’t making many sales and is ‘doing-it-hard’ the chances of them even having the money left after paying for groceries/rent etc is unlikely. So for them to give you your money back for whatever reason, is chancy to say the least. But even some well-known operators on the Internet leave you out in the cold by claiming ‘costs’ when returning only a proportion of your purchase money that they originally guaranteed in full. It’s these shonks who get my ire up and running! They are killing the Internet as it now stands - because it is coming sooner than later - that guarantee insurance is going to be a requirement if the Internet is to continue as a reliable and honest means of commerce. My contractors all give guarantees that they actually, physically perform. Anyone who doesn’t is run-out-of-town or business real quick. Yet they all carry a range of insurance policies as well ranging from 1 million Dollars upwards. Yet some Internet operators are selling products on the Internet for many thousands of dollars with no real guarantee of money back to their buyers if not 100% satisfied. I think this is overdue for a substantial backup system to be put in place. So I have to ask, “Would you be more inclined to use the Internet to purchase products if there was a better guarantee system in place?” I know I would. http://www.constructingprofits.com Showing contractors how to make more money ~ working less hours! 7 Steps to Effective Communication

By Sheila Dicks The success of any business or organization depends largely on how effectively the members communicate. The ability to speak well is a minimum requirement of some businesses when hiring. Whatever the job, business professionals require extensive use of oral communication when carrying out their duties. Effective communication involves: Listening: Good listening skills and showing a genuine interest are attributes of a successful communicator. Sales associates who actively listen to customers inquires and complaints are more able to solve problems and gain customer loyalty. Use Names: When meeting people make sure you hear the persons name and use it right away so you will remember it. If you are not sure what the person said, ask him/her to repeat it. Get to the Point: Show value for peoples time by being as concise as possible when giving information. Do not give lengthy, unnecessary details and dont make excuses for your mistakes. Answer the question and give important information only. Let Others Talk: Dont be a person who does all the talking. What you are saying may be of interest to you only. Keep the other person in mind, giving him/her a chance to be a part of the conversation. Look for signals that you may be boring your listener and ask questions to involve them in the conversation. Non-verbal Language: Nine-five percent of our communication is non-verbal, which includes: eye movement, tone of voice, posture, facial expressions and hand gestures. When talking to someone keeping eye contact without staring shows a sense of confidence. Be aware of non-verbal communication and keep it consistent with your message. Vocal Cues: Do not use an excessive amount of filler words (sayings or words repeated often), sounds such as uh, um or use lengthy pauses during conversation. The listener will lose interest in what you are saying and will become bored. Create an Atmosphere of Openness: To establish a good relationship with customers and create a comfortable atmosphere be attentive to the number of interruptions. Give your customer/acquaintance your undivided attention by not keeping physical barriers (such as desks) between you. Avoid trying to communicate in a busy area and keep your focus on the listener. M.B.A. Overview

By Melissa Steele Students entering business school to earn their MBA degree will need varied skills and have basic proficiency in certain areas. The level of math skills necessary in business school will vary depending on the program. Many Master of Business Administration programs require statistics, algebra, and most likely, calculus. You may want to refresh your skills if they are in question before entering an MBA program. Most business schools require the use of personal computers throughout your MBA program. Many schools will require that you have your own laptop. Though the extent to which you use a computer will vary, you should be comfortable with word processing, spreadsheets and databases. Each school will give you their minimum basic requirements for computer skills and hardware/software needs. Schools today attempt to mimic the business environment in their academic programs by using student teams. As corporations have increasingly turned to teams to work on projects and to solve problems, MBA programs have transformed a larger portion of course work from individual work to teamwork. Many master of business administration programs now include teambuilding training as team building workshops, or as a subject in organizational behavior courses. Teams may be formed for the purpose of one project in one course or they may remain together for months, working on multiple courses. In the competitive setting of MBA programs, the cooperation of students in teambuilding exercises is often difficult. Students that participate in team activities find that working with others takes up a lot of academic time. The fundamentals of business are taught in every MBA program. Economics, finance, accounting, organizational behavior, marketing, and statistics are in the basic repertoire for master of business administration programs. In business school these subjects are considered a core group of courses required of every student. These core courses make up the first year of study in a two-year full-time program. In some programs, students who have a prior background in business can bypass some or all of the core courses on the basis of either a special examination or an evaluation of the undergraduate transcript. My Spring Bulbs Won’t Bloom - Why?

By Doug Green You can hear the wailing from here. Why arent my bulbs blooming? There are a lot of leaves on them but not a single flower. The overall cause of a bulb not producing a bloom is either the bud wasnt formed or it was damaged in some way. No bud equals no flower. Heres why your bud might have been killed: There wasnt enough sunlight last summer or you planted your bulbs in too shady an area. For the most part, spring blooming bulbs want full sunshine for at least six hours a day. If you do not give them enough sunshine, they may live but not have enough energy to produce a flower bud. You might have cut off the foliage last year before it yellowed naturally. If you cut off the foliage before it yellows, the bulb will not be able to get enough sunlight to produce a bud. Remember Doug Greens number one rule for growing bulbs, Grow the foliage, the flower will take care of itself. You might have tied up the foliage over top of the bulb to give yourself room to plant annuals. This is an old trick that wont go away but is still not recommended for growing good bulb leaves. (Do you think youd grow very well if you had to hold your arms over your head all the time?) You might have planted them too early last fall. Once the bulb had rooted and the ground was still warm, it might have started to produce a flower bud. Once that bud emerges, it either lives or dies on the soil temperature. An emerged bud that hits frozen or too-cold soil is going to die and this means there wont be another bud for the following spring. Perhaps you overfed or overwatered those bulbs. Overwatering bulbs will most often kill them because they will rot (think of leaving an onion in a glass of water). Spring flowering bulbs have developed in areas where there is winter-cold and spring-rains but summer drought. When you water your garden in the summer to keep the annuals and perennials happy, you are making your bulbs unhappy. Too much water and the bulbs will disappear taking their flowers with them. Perhaps the bulbs have grown up magnificently and multiplied. If so, they might simply require dividing to produce flowers again. This is not likely in a normal garden setting but possible. You can tell if there are scads of leaves all coming from the same small area if the bulbs are too crowded. You want to know if it is a disease. The odds are that it is not. Bulb diseases either disfigure flowers or kill the bulbs. None just kill off the flower bud. The odds are it is a cultural thing and not a disease. You just have to figure out what you need to give the bulb to make it happy. You can do this at Doug Greens flower-garden-bulbs.com website Remember, grow those leaves to make the flowers bloom. copyright Douglas Green 2005 Doug Green is an award winning garden writer with over 30 years experience in the horticultural industry. Standing Above The Crowd

By Kelley Robertson In todays highly competitive business environment it is critical to find ways to separate yourself from the other companies who sell the same or similar product and/or service. Here are several strategies that can help you accomplish this: Help your clients achieve their goals. Virtually every business person has specific goals they are striving to achieve. These can include everything from increasing their market share and sales, to reducing operating expenses, to streamlining the business, to incorporating new business practices. Invest time learning the key objectives of each of your customers. Then determine how your products and services can help them achieve their targets. In some cases, you may not be able to help them but recommending someone who can assist them will be recognized and remembered. The more you can help them achieve their goals the more valued you will become. Under-promise, over-deliver. As old as this expression is, it is still one of the best ways to stand out from the crowd. Far too many people make commitments to their customers and fail to follow through as promised. Its easy to fall into this trap, particularly for service-oriented individuals. We have every intention of delivering on a promise but often, unexpected circumstances crop up that prevent of from doing so. While this is acceptable by most people once in a while frequent occurrences will drive your customers to your competition. Be innovative. Most companies do business the same way until a crisis, emergency, or significant change in the marketplace forces them to adapt. The most successful organizations are creative and innovative. They constantly look for new ways to do business, gain more their market share, please their customers, and offer new products and services. The inherent challenge with this is that you will encounter resistance from many people both inside and outside of the company; I have experienced this first-hand in several companies I have worked for. However, if you try to be innovative ONLY when its absolutely necessary, you will never get the head-start on your competition. Watch for trends in other industries as well as yours and think of how you can incorporate these into your business. Be a leader instead of a follower. Surprise them. Look for ways to surprise your customers and do something completely unexpected for them. Make a charitable donation in their name. Invite them to a special event. Give them a bonus gift or service. Find out what networking events your clients might like to attend and send them a complimentary invitation. If they enjoy reading send an occasional book in their area of interest. Gift certificates to a show or play may be appreciated by some of your customers. Two words of caution: i) Be careful that your surprise is not misinterpreted as a bribe to do business with you. There cannot be any strings or hidden conditions attached to this offering. ii) Make sure your client is allowed to accept a gift. Some organizations have a strict no gift policy and you must respect it. Keep in touch. Very few people keep in touch on a regular basis with their customers. Yet, this is the best way to keep your name in their mind. An effective strategy without appearing like a pest is to send them useful information on a regular basis. You can send a newspaper clipping or a magazine article. You can also send them helpful and practical tips to improve their business; this can be set up quite easily electronically. Send cards on special occasions but instead of the standard Christmas cards send some on lesser promoted days such as St. Patricks Day and Halloween, etc. You can also send postcards from exotic locations just be careful not to write a tacky message. This past winter I traveled to St. Maarten in the Caribbean and found a beautiful postcard of a beach along the Caribbean Ocean. I sent this card to about four dozen clients and prospects with the message, When the winter starts getting you down, take a three minute vacation by picturing yourself on this beach. Have a VIP day. You can organize a golf tournament assuming of course your customers play the game. If youre a retailer, you can invite your best customer to an invitation-only special sale. Every year, a friend of mine organizes an evening filled with networking opportunities, guest speakers, great food and beverages and invites his clients, prospects, and friends to attend. Another friend of mine takes several of his clients on excursions to a local winery. He ensures they get a tour, a private tasting of premium wines, and a five-star dinner. 2005 Kelley Robertson, All rights reserved Kelley Robertson, President of the Robertson Training Group, works with businesses to help them increase their sales and motivate their employees. 4 Types of Pick-Up Lines That Actually Work

By Scott Patterson You may have heard that pick up lines don’t work. Well that is only half the story. The way to make a pick up line work is, yes, you’ve guessed it…..is to not make it sound like a pick up line! If you were a woman would you rather hear “ouch, it must have hurt when you fell from heaven” or “hi there, that’s a really cool necklace, what’s the story behind it?” Notice how one pick up line sounds like you are trying too hard while the other one sounds more natural. And that’s the key to making pick up lines work. Studies have shown that it is not what you say as much as how you say it. Communication between human beings is mostly non-verbal, which means that only 20 to 40% of what you actually say has any real meaning to the other person. And if you are talking over the phone, the tone of your voice can convey far more than your words. So keep that in mind when you want to pick up on someone. Personally, I don’t like the term “pick up” I prefer the term “rapport”. Another thing that makes a pickup line effective is when you are not too concerned about the outcome. It is far more effective to be focused on making her feel good and trying to pick up on her. So here are for pick up lines that work basically because they do not sound like pick up lines. “Excuse me, but I couldn’t help but notice your necklace, it’s very unique is there a story behind it?” “Hey ladies, let me ask you, this will only take a sec, I was wondering what you thought about…?” “Hi there, I just wanted to let you know that I’m in a real hurry right now so I don’t really have a whole lot of time to be charming and witty. We will probably never see each other again so I’m going to be very forward and say that I think you have a very nice smile and we should get together for a drink sometime since I don’t know anything about you.” (This works extremely well when you see her walking on the street and you’re walking in one direction and she is walking in another direction). “Hi there, I would really like to talk to you and see what you’re like but I haven’t seen you smile yet so let’s see that smile.” I want you to keep something in mind and that is this: that it is not so much what you say but how you say it. I cannot over emphasize this enough. Unfortunately, this advice will fall on deaf ears because there are still plenty of men looking for pickup lines on the Internet. If a pickup line sound like a pick up line it loses its effectiveness. But if you can walk up to a woman and come off as natural, confident, and relaxed and you’re only objective is to have some fun than you will find your dating calendar filling up much faster than you anticipated. Herbal Smoke - The History And Uses Of Herbal Smoke

By Jean Helmet Herbal smoke has been around for centuries. It is and was used for ceremonial, religious, or medicinal purposes. Ancient cultures often used it to gain a feeling of ecstasy, to enhance dreams and to enable one to have visions. You should know that herbal smoke is not fake marijuana or illegal. It is not meant to be a substitute for tobacco or pot. They are provided to be an alternative to them. Herbal smoke products have become increasingly popular for a host of reasons. The most obvious of course is the fact that they are legal in the United States and many other countries as well. The bad effects of smoking tobacco(nicotine) and marijuana are other reasons for the popularity. Another reason for Herbal Smoke popularity and use is that many companies now insist on drug testing and the herbal smoke does not create a positive result in drug tests.
